Project Mars is a sci-fi environment art project created in Houdini. The scene explores procedural environment workflows to build a large-scale Mars landscape with cinematic lighting.
I wanted to create a full CG-Environment with dynamic interaction. Fascinated by all space related sci-fi elements, this was the first idea that came to my mind.
An astronaut walking with his little probe robot companion and then running for life from a menacing giant dust storm coming closer and closer.
The Heightfields were created in Gaea and than exported to Houdini where they were populated with Kitbash assets like stones and rocks.
This was also the first time I tried Houdinis new KineFX system to mix, combine and alter animations.
To make simulations efficient I used Houdinis PCG system to create wedges which were brought together at renderstage.
