Houdini Fluid Simulation – Crown Splash Water Effect

In this project I focused on a detailed Houdini fluid simulation to create a realistic crown splash water effect with cinematic motion & lighting.

Since I started Houdini I was fascinated by fluid simulations, one of the most intricate topics you can tackle in 3d. Complex liquid behaviour and long simulation times due to high particle counts and a lot of substeps can make this endeavour quite unintuitive.

So this is my take on a slow motion crown splash.

A major challenge was to get a clean surface mesh out of my particles. Its not unusual to get a jittering and flickering mesh from the particle simulation and its the artist's task to solve this.

Either with traditional ways like more simulation substeps or lower particle separation or a more creative solution process. Often its a mixture of both.
