Leaf Drop – Macro Fluid

Macro Fluid Simulation in Houdini – Leaf Drop

In this project I explored a macro fluid simulation in Houdini, focusing on subtle water interaction, close-up detail and materials.

Software: Houdini
Category: Simulation, Environment, Lighting & Rendering
Tools: Vellum Fluids, Particles, Procedural Animation/CHOPS, VDB-Tools

The goal here was to create an ad-like slow motion drop, always in focus of the camera, vivid colors and a shining reflecting water material for the drop itself.

To break up the style I added the camera splash at the end.

The drop was created as a vellum fluid simulation and the resulting VDB was morphed into the falling drop which then was transformed to a regular fluid simulation. I took a single droplet and animated it along a curve to get granular control over speed and movement. This drop was later my emitter for the camera splash

So there are two transistions which was a lot of back and forth and manual adjustment.

Usually I don't like keyframing but sometimes it's handy to achieve the desired result.
